Join the Walking for Mental Health Challenge

NC State is excited to announce a special initiative to promote mental well-being and walking during Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

The university has partnered with BetterYou to invite you to join the Walking for Mental Health Challenge. The challenge is a fantastic opportunity to prioritize your mental health while staying active. Walking has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood and boost overall mental health. 

By joining this challenge, you’ll be taking a step towards a healthier, happier you. Don’t miss out on this chance to join the NC State community and make a positive impact on your mental health. Set goals, meet milestones and win prizes from BetterYou.

How To Join the Challenge

  1. You can join the challenge by downloading the BetterYou app for free and signing up with your NC State email address.
  2. Open the app and click “CHALLENGES” at the bottom of your screen. Next, select the NC State Walking for Mental Health Challenge
  3. You can walk with friends, family or pets during the times that work best for you, participate in the walking opportunities below or both.

Important Dates

  • You can sign up for the challenge through Friday, May 2.
  • The challenge kicks off Monday, May 5, during Our Extraordinary Pack Employee Appreciation Week at NC State, and will continue through May 23.

Group Walking Opportunities

Participants in NC State’s Wellness Champions program will lead walking opportunities during the challenge. You are welcome to join walks on any of the dates below.

Monday, May 5

  • 9 a.m.: Meet Cristal Cruz at the front main entrance of Harris Hall.
  • 9:30 a.m.: Meet Taneisha Armstrong at 403 Government Circle in Greenville, North Carolina, in the building lobby.
  • 10 a.m.: Meet Andrea Hoch, Susan Uy and Tammie Maurice at the Parks Shops at the main entrance. 
  • 11 a.m.: Meet Dan Passonno, Emily Anderson and Lauren Smith at the front entrance of Campus Health on Cates Avenue. 
  • Noon: Meet Dave Herpy and Allison Hubbard on the front steps at the main entrance to Ricks Hall.
  • 2 p.m.: Meet Cynthia Rivenbark at the Extension office at 801 S. Walker St. in Burgaw, North Carolina.

Tuesday, May 6

  • 11 a.m.: Meet Jesse Reappole at the entrance of Administrative Services I.
  • 11:30 a.m.: Meet Cristal Cruz at the front main entrance of Harris Hall. 
  • 11:30 a.m. Meet the Faculty and Staff Walking Club at the Starbucks at Talley Student Union.
  • Noon: Meet Darien Bradley at the Hillsborough Street entrance of Nelson Hall.

Wednesday, May 7

  • 9 a.m.: Meet Andrea Sherrill at 444 Bristol Avenue in Statesville, North Carolina.
  • 9 a.m.: Meet Cristal Cruz at the front main entrance of Harris Hall. 
  • 11 a.m.: Meet Davina Thrash in front of Hunt Library by the bench before the bus stop.
  • Noon: Meet Janice Sitzes at the natural area between Jordan and Biltmore halls.
  • 4 p.m. Meet Sara Snyder at the Agroecology Farm at 4400 Mid Pines Road in Raleigh.

Thursday, May 8

  • 11:30 a.m.: Meet Cristal Cruz at the front main entrance of Harris Hall.
  • Noon: Meet Alexis Steptoe and Renee Harrington at the Starbucks at Talley Student Union.
  • 1:50 p.m.: Meet Domonique Carter at Engineering Building II in the breezeway.

Friday, May 9

  • 9 a.m.: Meet Cristal Cruz at the front main entrance of Harris Hall.
  • 11 a.m.: Meet Demar Bonnemere at the Administrative Services I building entrance.

Webinars to Get You Moving

If you need some motivation and advice to start exercising, join HR Wellness for a workshop that will cover the basic concepts of exercise, the benefits of exercise, types of exercise and how to begin an exercise program safely.
