Eligible NC Residents Can Use Free Online IRS Tool To File Taxes

The IRS has expanded the use of Direct File, its free online system for filing tax returns, to residents in 13 states, including North Carolina.

Direct File began as a pilot program in 2024 with 12 states participating. The system allows residents the option to file their federal and state taxes directly with the government.

The tax filing season began Jan. 27. The deadline to file taxes is April 15. Direct File will be available to file taxes through Oct. 15, the deadline to file taxes for those who ask for an extension.

Direct File gives you a simple and secure way to file your taxes and get your tax credits, including:

  • The earned income tax credit
  • The child tax credit
  • Credit for other dependents
  • The child and dependent care credit
  • The premium tax credit
  • The retirement savings contributions credit, also known as the saver’s credit
  • Credit for the elderly and disabled

Direct File may be a good option for you if:

  • You are over 18 years old
  • You lived in North Carolina for all of 2024
  • You earned all of your income in North Carolina in 2024
  • Your income comes from earned wages (W-2 income), interest payments, Social Security, retirement income or unemployment compensation

Direct File is available in English and Spanish. It works on mobile devices, tablets and personal computers and offers dedicated live chat support.

For more information about Direct File and to see if you are eligible to use it, visit the Direct File website. Direct File customer support is available through the IRS.

University Human Resources does not endorse the use of Direct File but instead is sharing it as a resource. Please make your own decisions about what tax-filing service to use.
