Are You Up to Date on Your Measles Vaccination?

With measles cases rising nationally, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) says it’s a good time to check your immunization status —especially before the fall semester begins.
Measles is highly contagious, and exposure on campus not only poses serious health risks for those without vaccinations, but also significant disruptions for those without proof of immunity. Per NCDHHS, anyone without documented immunity may be required to quarantine for a minimum of 21 days, if exposed.
To help prevent unnecessary isolation, it is recommended that university employees confirm their immunization status, which is covered by the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, and ensure documentation is readily available if requested. The MMR vaccination provides strong protection — around 97% effectiveness with two doses — and greatly reduces your risk of illness or quarantine.
If you’re unsure of your vaccination history, contact your primary care provider. The MMR vaccine is covered by most major insurance plans, including the State Health Plan, and is available at many network-partnered pharmacies, clinics and doctors’ offices.
“Taking this step now is a simple way to protect yourself and help prepare our Pack for a healthy semester,” said Dr. Courtney Hinton, interim medical director of Campus Health.
