Use Community Service Leave To Volunteer in Western North Carolina

The Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) is giving employees another opportunity to use community service leave to support Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in Western North Carolina. OSHR provided a similar opportunity last year.
Community Service Leave Details
- Additional leave available: Eligible leave-earning employees can use 16 hours of paid community service leave for Helene-related volunteer activities. The 16 hours are in addition to the 24 hours of community service leave eligible employees receive each year.
- Approved volunteer activities: Employees can use the 16 hours to support organized storm-related efforts coordinated by:
- A local county or municipal government entity
- A public university, community college or state agency
- An established nonprofit, nonpartisan community organization designated as a 501(c)(3) agency or a human service organization licensed or accredited to serve citizens with needs, including children, youth and the elderly
Requirements for Using Community Service Leave
- Supervisor approval: Employees must obtain approval from their supervisor before using the additional leave.
- Documentation: Employees must provide documentation confirming they used the community service leave hours for Helene-related volunteer activities.
- WolfTime entry: Employees who use community service leave to support Helene-related recovery efforts must record their community service leave time in WolfTime. To record your leave time, go to MyPack Portal, click the WolfTime tile and then select the Manage Absences tile. Select the “Hurricane/Weather Relief” option under the Absence Name dropdown menu on the Manage Absences page.
Leave Time for Helene-Related Volunteer Efforts Will Expire
The 16 hours of community service leave for Helene-related volunteer activities will expire on Dec. 31. University Human Resources encourages employees to take advantage of this opportunity to make a positive impact on our community during this critical recovery period.
