Set Bold Goals for 2026

As we close out 2025 and set our sights on 2026, now is the perfect time to set goals. Whether it’s personal or professional development, growth doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by choice.

Without goal setting, career development is a lot like taking a road trip without a GPS device. You might get lucky and manage to land in a good place, but you could end up adrift, going in circles or, worse yet, fail to reach your destination.

Here is a framework to help you make your next lateral move a deliberate step toward your long-term career goals.

  1. Define your core values: These are the foundational values that inform your decision making and are non-negotiable.
  2. Clarify your purpose: Why does this goal matter to you? Does it connect to your core values?
  3. Make it SMART: Choose goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
  4. Break it down: Sub-divide your main goal into smaller chunks and add deadlines.
  5. Write it down: Document your progress in a journal. Check out the upcoming Journaling and Writing for Personal Growth course on Dec. 18 to learn how.
  6. Track your progress: Share your goals with others to keep yourself accountable. Jot down milestones and don’t forget to celebrate wins.

Studies show that career goal setting leads to better job performance, increased motivation and focus and, when shared with others, greater accountability. Psychological benefits include a greater sense of purpose, reduced stress and increased resilience and perseverance.
