Volunteer To Teach a Fitness Class

University Human Resources is working to launch a wellness program that will offer an array of free fitness classes and is hoping to find employees who can teach the classes.

The program is called Employee Wellness Wednesdays, and UHR plans to offer it monthly to all NC State employees at different locations on main campus. The new program would give employees another on-campus option for taking fitness classes. Free yoga classes are available on Centennial Campus and at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design. The Wellness and Recreation Center offers an assortment of fitness classes.

A launch date for the new wellness program has not been set.

“I think wellness is extremely important right now, and we need to prioritize the wellness of staff and faculty,” said Alexa DeFalco, one of the organizers of Employee Wellness Wednesdays. “The classes will be an outlet to build community with others interested in wellness and for employees to take time for themselves to participate in something that makes them feel good.”

Organizers of the new wellness program hope to offer yoga, Pilates, Zumba and other general fitness classes when it starts. To launch the program, UHR needs certified fitness instructors to lead classes on a volunteer basis. You can sign up to be a volunteer instructor if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are an NC State employee.
  • You have a valid certification to teach a fitness class like the ones mentioned above.
  • You have a valid CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) certification, you are in the process of getting a certification, or you are willing to get a certification.

“I think this is a wonderful way to use your skills to give back to our NC State community,” said DeFalco, who works as a training specialist in Learning and Organizational Development in UHR. “There is a desire among employees for a program like this to exist.”
