Favorite Outdoor Places in North Carolina

Dix Park

North Carolina is certainly endowed with amazing natural beauty and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. With countless parks, national forests, city greenways, beautiful beaches, and scenic mountains, outdoor fun in North Carolina has helped make physical distancing and COVID-19 restrictions a little more tolerable.

Now that the weather is warming up, we asked some of our NC State colleagues to share with us their favorite outdoor spots in North Carolina and why they enjoy visiting them. Here are some of the many responses we received.

Why is this your favorite outdoor place to visit?
What I love most about Downtown Durham’s entertainment district is that it allows you to experience a little of everything i.e., skating, minor league baseball, outdoor concerts, festivals and great restaurants. But my favorite outdoor place is the Lucky Strike Water Tower. What a beautiful place to stroll, sit and relax, listen to music, take pictures and watch the colorful waterfall at night. It’s very peaceful and a fun place to just hang out. It’s also one of my favorite places to bring family when they come to town.

Mount Pisgah Trail is a walkable, two-mile hike, which brings you to the summit of the namesake mountain at 5,722 feet. On a clear day you are afforded amazing views across western North Carolina. Early morning hikes will present you with a view of an amazing meteorological phenomena, with a sea of clouds beneath your feet. In warmer months, wildflowers abound, and in the spring, wild laurel and rhododendrons decorate the landscape with beautiful flowers.
