As part of our commitment to supporting employees, University Human Resources is thrilled to announce two initiatives launching this month to help your family thrive.
The Parenting and Family Resources Guide
UHR designed the Parenting and Family Resources Guide to support your journey through every stage of family planning. We have gathered university benefits, adoption and infertility resources, parental leave information, local childcare partnerships and community support systems into one easy-to-navigate guide.
What’s Inside the Guide?
- University benefits: Knowing the benefits available to you is an important step in family planning. The guide provides information about fertility services, prescription drug coverage, legal services, flexible spending accounts and parental leave programs.
- Childcare support: NC State offers a childcare subsidy for eligible employees and connections to childcare providers in the Triangle area that offer discounts to NC State employees. The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program can help you evaluate local childcare providers, check for openings at childcare centers and understand childcare subsidies.
- Campus support networks: The guide has information on specialized programs that support pre- and post-leave accommodations and about lactation spaces that are available across campus.
- Community connection resources: The guide also includes parent support groups that share positive parenting strategies, aim to reduce the isolation that often comes with caregiving and foster community connections on and off campus.
Family-Focused Webinar Series
We are hosting a dynamic lineup of parenting webinars in August and September. These webinars will give you practical tools to manage everything from toddlers to teenagers, all while maintaining your own well-being.
Communication Skills for Families
Tuesday, Aug. 25, noon-1 p.m.
Overview: Communication is a fine art that we often take for granted. It takes more than physical and verbal abilities to communicate. It takes the ability to offer support and demonstrate compassion when communicating within your family. Whether it’s an expectation, emotion, question or other message, openness and willingness to communicate improve the overall quality of family communication.
Communicating the Tough Stuff to Your Child: Drugs, Alcohol, Sex & Peer Pressure
Monday, Aug. 31, noon-1 p.m.
Overview: It can be tough to be a teenager today and tough to be a parent of a teenager. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by stories about adolescents and violence, sex, drugs, suicides, alcohol and crime. All of these concerns are real, but the good news is most teenagers are OK. The relationship you’ve had with your child all these years will play a big part in how your teenager will act. As your child matures, your relationship will change, but it can still be positive and close. This workshop helps parents learn communication methods to talk to their teen.
Basics of Estate Planning
Tuesday, Sept. 1, 9-10 a.m.
Overview: Although most people think estate planning is for just the elderly, it is actually important to everyone else, too — especially for those with minor children, substantial assets or unusual circumstances. Estate planning can help you make decisions on who receives your estate and to make arrangements for disability, medical care and guardianship for minor children. When done properly, estate planning can remove many burdens from surviving family members during a stressful time.
