NC State Remains Committed To Offering Flexible Work

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of workers across the country have been working from home on a full- or part-time basis for the past three years. Many of them have embraced the new work-from-home model, and they want remote work options to continue to be available to them in the future, according to a March 2022 Gallup story on the future of hybrid work.

That story cited a Gallup survey indicating 9 of 10 workers who have remote-capable jobs prefer to have some degree of long-term remote flexibility in the future, and nearly six of 10 workers prefer to have hybrid work options in the future. An Owl Labs study based on a 2022 survey found that prior to the pandemic, only 8% of companies had flexible workplace policies in place. Of the more than 2,300 full-time U.S. workers who responded to the survey, 62% of employees said their companies had implemented at least some flexible work options.

These survey results reflect how much job seekers and employees want employers to offer flexible work options. They also indicate that employers are embracing flexible work because of its many positive benefits, including improving employee productivity, morale and retention, and attracting job candidates.

In 2021, NC State established a flexible work arrangements regulation to align units’ business and operational needs with employee interest in alternative work locations and flexible work schedules. We have also provided our departments and units with guidance and a dedicated website to help implement flexible work arrangements.

NC State is committed to continuing to offer flexible work arrangements to our university community. We will soon launch a new flexible work request form that will be housed in the HR PeopleSoft system. This new form will provide NC State employees and supervisors with a standard, consistent way to manage their flexible work arrangements. The new form will be made available through MyPack Portal on the Employee Self Service page June 5.

Our new flexible work request form is another tool that we’ve created to try to ensure our flexible work program continues to be successful. We look forward to developing more tools and sharing more resources that support flexible work and our Wolfpack community.
