Enroll in Securian Voluntary Life Insurance Feb. 14-March 4

Eligible employees can enroll in Securian voluntary life insurance options or change their current coverage through the UNC System Life Insurance Portal. Take some time to review your options, which are outlined below, before you enroll in or change your coverage. You can enroll or make changes Feb.14-March 4.

Coverage Options for Those Currently Enrolled in the UNC Voluntary Life Insurance Plan With Securian

You can increase plan coverage for yourself and your spouse up to the guaranteed issue amounts without providing evidence of insurability. More information about guaranteed issue amounts is provided below. If you elect a coverage amount above a guaranteed issue amount or are already at the guaranteed issue amount and want to increase your coverage, evidence of insurability will be required.

Guaranteed Issue Reminders

Guaranteed issue refers to the amount of coverage that is guaranteed to be issued regardless of health status.

The guaranteed issue amounts for the UNC Voluntary Life Insurance Plan are as follows:

  • For employee coverage: the lesser of three times your salary or $500,000.
  • For spousal coverage: $50,000.
  • For a child or children: Not applicable. Evidence of insurability is never required for a child or children.

If you haven’t already done so, you can enroll a child or children in the plan. The benefit is a flat $10,000 per child.

Coverage Options for Those Not Currently Enrolled in the UNC Voluntary Life Insurance Plan With Securian

You may elect coverage for yourself and your spouse up to the guaranteed issue amount without providing evidence of insurability. Please see the guaranteed issue amounts above. If you select coverage amounts above the guaranteed issue amount, evidence of insurability will be required.

You can also enroll a child or children in the plan. The benefit is a flat $10,000 per child.

Accidental death and dismemberment coverage for employees only is included in the UNC Voluntary Life Insurance Plan at no additional cost. AD&D insurance pays a benefit if you die or are seriously injured as the result of an accident. The coverage is effective 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and includes accidents on or off the job.

If you decide to enroll in or change your coverage amounts for the UNC Voluntary Life Insurance Plan with Securian and want to cancel your coverage under the NCFlex Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance or AD&D plan with VOYA, you won’t be able to cancel your existing coverage until next annual enrollment in the fall of 2022 unless you experience a change in family status or other qualifying event. The current enrollment opportunity for the UNC Voluntary Life Insurance Plan is not considered a qualifying event.

What You Need to Do

If you’d like to enroll in or make any changes to your UNC Voluntary Life Insurance Plan coverage with Securian, go to this step-by-step enrollment guide.

If you are not sure whether you are enrolled in a Securian life insurance plan, log into MyPackPortal and click “Benefits Details and then “Benefit Summary.”

Look for a tile labeled “Employee Life.”

Be sure to add your beneficiaries to the new benefit administration platform if you haven’t already done so, as those elections were not automatically transferred to our new system. To enter your beneficiaries, follow this step-by-step guide.

If you’re enrolling for the first time, you will be required to designate your beneficiaries when you elect coverage. If you choose to cover dependents, you will need to enter their date of birth and Social Security number.
