Ready to Retire? UHR Can Help You.

Ready to Retire

University Human Resources will host a Ready to Retire workshop from 1 p.m to 5 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the State Ballroom at Talley Student Union.

The purpose of the workshop is to prepare NC State employees for the retirement process. Financial advisers from TIAA, Fidelity and Prudential and experts from the Social Security Administration, the State Health Plan and NC State’s Benefits Office will attend the workshop.

The workshop will cover a wide range of topics, such as retirement plans, investment options and health care plans, including Medicare. The advisers and experts who will make presentations during the workshop will be available to answer questions one on one.

Britt Hurst, manager of the Employee Recognition and Wellness Program at UHR, said the workshop helps employees get in the mindset to retire and become familiar with the retirement process so there are no surprises when they actually retire.

“It’s important for employees leading up to retirement to be both financially prepared and mentally prepared for retirement,” she said.

NC State University offers Ready to Retire twice each academic year — once during the fall semester and again during the spring semester. The workshops are free to attend.

Hurst encourages employees to attend Ready to Retire at least twice. She said employees should consider attending seven years before retiring and again when they are three to five years from retiring.

Hurst said Ready to Retire prepares first-time attendees for what to expect during the retirement process. She said the workshop can help second-time attendees stay on track to retire.

“It’s really good to at least get a cursory understanding of the retirement process, what goes into it and the things you should be thinking about before you retire,” Hurst said.
